Modelobjects enables new level of team productivity tooling inside Autodesk® Revit® by integrating its R-Communicator with Autodesk BIM 360® Docs.

“Collaboration” can sometimes be a buzz word often thrown around in the context of enabling productivity. Sometimes it’s thought of as passive, something instinctively done when given the right tools. But what does it really mean? And how can we foster it?

Well, collaboration, for us, has at its core a few enabling factors; culture, communication and work tools. One component cannot drive collaboration independently of the others and they must be neatly interwoven to best serve the team, project outcome and business. We see culture as the driving force behind team interaction and tools as the means to enable it. A recent study on workplace innovation by Raconteur and Google for Work found that “73% of respondents agreed that their organisation would be more successful if employees were able to work in more flexible and collaborative ways.”

At Modelobjects, we believe critical catalysts of collaborative team culture are recognizing it’s time sensitive nature and therefore providing real-time access to key information across tools. That is why we created R-Communicator, a neatly organized platform tied to the team’s shared model(s), running in parallel and in real-time inside Autodesk® Revit®.

Figure 1 shows a live conversation taking place on a model element inside Autodesk Revit.

The beauty of R-Communicator is its interface to show Autodesk BIM 360® Docs content right inside Autodesk Revit. All Autodesk BIM 360 Docs projects, members, folders, files, issues and comments can be viewed, modified and deleted from within Autodesk Revit.

R-Communicator allows conversations to be “pinned” to any model element in any file originating from BIM 360 Docs. Therefore, any model element can become a live team conversation in Revit. Members can also trigger a 1:1 conversation with any BIM 360 Docs project member from inside Revit. The conversation can unfold within Revit not only in real-time, but also has the context of each model element, its characteristics, associated issues and history.

Additionally, BIM 360 issues can be highlighted, managed and manipulated from inside the live Revit model. This allows designers to minimize the constant tool switching while remaining in the design environment where they spend most of their time.

Figure 2 shows highlighted Autodesk BIM 360 Docs issues that are on-time (green) and late (red) in the live Autodesk Revit model.

For example, teams can see who is struggling and in need of support, who is late in meeting a deadline and why. With this integration, teams can manage collaboration between Revit and BIM 360 to improve productivity.

Teams that gel well are an invaluable asset to the business. Those that do are a product of the team culture, and only tools that empower and unleash their natural propensity to interact, in our view, should be considered as an acceptable part of the tool chain.
